The Benefits of Indirect Water Heaters

benefits of indirect water heatersIf this is the first time you’ve heard of indirect water heaters, don’t worry. You’ll just be one of the many home owners who don’t know about them, much less how they work, even though they have been around since the 1970s.

For the benefit of home owners who don’t know much about them, indirect water heaters are typically connected to a boiler through piping. They get their indirect heating from the boilers they’re attached to, which explains the name. Indirect water heaters circulate hot water from the boiler to a heat exchanger within the water heater. The coils of heat exchanger, in turn, heat the water for your use at home.

Indirect water heaters offer a lot of benefits, and here are some of them:

Indirect water heaters have higher efficiency

Any indirect water heater heats water at the same heating efficiency level as the boiler it’s connected to. To get an idea how efficient they are, take note that your usual gas water heater runs at 60 to 70 percent efficiency. Boilers, particularly the high efficiency ones, are at 96 percent most of the time.

Indirect water heaters do not lose too much heat

When not in use, an indirect water heater doesn’t lose too much heat unlike your average gas water heater. That’s because indirect water heaters have very good insulation, and that keeps the water hot even during long standby periods.

An indirect water heater performs better

The performance of an indirect water heater is directly proportional to the performance of the boiler it’s attached to. Considering the fact that most boilers at home are big ones, you will have a steady supply of hot water that’s bigger than anything your standard gas water heater can produce. In most cases, indirect water heaters produce two to three times more hot water.

An indirect water heater provides ample hot water storage

Indirect hot water heaters provide storage of up to 200 gallons of hot or even more. That means you’re capable of high-volume flow-rate usage. You can have hot water whenever you need it for showering, cooking, dishwashing or laundering.

Indirect water heaters last longer

Believe it or not, an indirect water heater often carries a lifetime tank warranty, and that is one of the major benefits of indirect water heaters. It makes sense, really, since they are never subjected to the kind of stress and abuse that are commonly inflicted on other types of water heaters. The fact that they are also often made out of stainless steel contributes to its longevity as well. If you buy an indirect water heater, the likelihood that it’s going to be the last water heater you’re going to need is high.

Contrary to what many home owners think, your boiler does not need to run all the time to provide you with hot water. As a matter of fact, the only time it will run is when you actually operate it when you need hot water.
