It’s great to have a safer showering experience at home, but there are times when you waste a lot of water and energy trying to find the right temperature mix. Worse, there have been injuries and even deaths, especially among the elderly and young children, because they have stepped into the shower unsupervised, turned on the valves and got doused with scalding hot water that has yet to be mixed with cold water for a safer showering experience.
The trial and error method of adjusting the temperature of the water in your shower is a wasteful and dangerous way to get hot showers. Personally, I believe every single household with a hot water system in place at home should install thermostatic mixing valves. Here are a number of reasons why you need them for your hot water system.
To prevent the growth of harmful bacteria like Legionella in the supply of water, the temperatures of water heaters should be kept at above 55°C. Water at this temperature is already scalding hot, but when it passes through thermostatic mixing valves, a safe and comfortable temperature is produced by automatically mixing cold water with the hot before pushing out of the showerhead. For thermostatic mixing valves, you are the one who has to preselect the temperature you’re most comfortable with, and that setting will remain constant unless you change it.
When you only have simple mixing valves, your solenoid valves, seats and tap heads tend to be more prone to being encrusted with scale. Thermostatic mixing valves, on the other hand, reduce the scaling of these system components. With less scaling, the output capacity of the accumulator increases, and that ensures that all the equipment and piping will have a longer life.
As previously mentioned, you waste a lot of water and energy with an ordinary mixing valve trying to get the temperature right. With thermostatic mixing valves, there will no longer be any need for a trial and error routine and you will be able to save water and energy in the process. The moment water comes out of the shower head, the heat of the water will automatically correspond with the temperature you have preselected. No more wasting precious minutes trying to get the mix right manually. Energy savings are widely believed to be in 30 per cent range, and that is already a lot.
For thermostatic mixing valves to work effectively, they have to be installed correctly. While installing thermostatic mixing valves can be relatively easy, it would still be best if you get a plumbing professional to do the task for you. At least with a skilled and experienced plumbing professional armed with the right tools, you can be absolutely sure that a safer showering experience for a long time.
