Prevent Mould Growth

There’s nothing more annoying than seeing those fuzzy specks of black on your wall, ceiling and other damp areas of your home. Mould is a common problem in homes. On top of causing actual damage to the house itself, mould also takes a toll on the health of people who live there. Health problems caused by mould include headaches, allergies, coughing, and asthma.

Certainly, a mould problem is something that a homeowner has to address the soonest possible time. If you don’t give it any immediate attention, it is bound to spread. By the time you decide to do something about it, it would already be too late, and you will have to do some major repairs to your home.

Preventing mould growth, however, isn’t just all about scrubbing the moldy spot clean. There are certain approaches you have to implement to solve your mould problem for good. This is what you need to do to keep mould under control:

Determine the Source of the Dampness

Mould thrives in damp places, which only makes it logical for you to pinpoint the source of all that dampness. If mould gathers on your ceiling, it could be a leaking roof. If it’s in your bathroom, you might have a leaking pipe or fixture. If some of your walls that are nowhere near obvious sources of damp are mouldy, humid air might somehow be getting trapped inside the house, or worse, that you might have a problem with your heating and cooling system.

If somehow you fail to pinpoint the source of dampness, perhaps it would be best if you call in the services of people who know how to treat mould right at their source.

Preventing Mould Growth through Repairs

Once the source of the dampness is pinpointed, you have to fix whatever it is that’s causing it. Have a roofing expert repair that leak in your roof, or a professional plumber to repair or replace any defecting pipes or fixtures. If the problem is humidity inside the house, there are people who are qualified to clean and repair your HVAC system in order to restore good air circulation inside your home and keep the air dry. When the air inside your house is dry, you are preventing mould growth in your home.

Scrub the Mould Away

Once the source of dampness has been pinpointed and the problems have been dealt with, it’s time for you to clean up whatever visible mould there is. Use hot water and disinfectant to just scrub the mould away. However, if the mould has already spread extensively and you’re worried about health problems caused by mould, you can always ask for professional help.
