Blocked Drains

A blocked drain is a common problem in homes. Depending on the severity of the blockage, a blocked drain can be cleared a certain number of ways. Among homeowners, one of the more popular ways of unclogging a blocked drain is by pouring a chemical drain cleaner that can be purchased at any hardware store. These drain cleaners come in liquid, gel or powder form, and are typically composed of chemicals that are strong enough to eat through whatever is causing the blocked drain and eventually allow water to flow normally.

These drain cleaners, however, are not exactly the safest of drain unclogging solutions. Being made of nasty chemicals, these drain cleaners all kinds of health risks. They’re extremely toxic when ingested, burn eyes, skin and mucous membranes and even cause explosions when used improperly. Fortunately, you can make your own homemade drain cleaner that poses none of the dangers of a commercial drain cleaner. All you need are baking soda, vinegar, and boiling water, and you can make something that will help clear a blocked drain without any hazard. Here’s how to make your own drain cleaner as well as how to use it.

Home-made Drain Cleaner for your Blocked Drain

1. Remove all standing water from your tub or sink that has a blocked drain

2. Pour 1 cup of baking soda down the blocked drain

3. Get approximately 2 cups of boiling water and pour it down the blocked drain, where it will mix with baking soda and help dissolve any grease buildup within your pipes.

4. After that, get another cup of baking soda and pour it down the blocked drain.

5. Follow this step up by pouring 1 cup of normal white vinegar down the blocked drain, then plug it up. The baking soda and the vinegar will produce a reaction that will sizzle and foam which will further clear the pipes of any obstructions.

6. Wait for a few minutes for the reaction to die down, then pour another cup of boiling water down the blocked drain to dislodge any remaining gunk and grease.

With this home-made drain cleaner, you will be sparing yourself from exposure to harsh chemicals and help the environment as well. Needless to say, it will also be so much cheaper if you make your own drain cleaner.

This cleaner, however, only works when the blocked drain is not that bad. If after several attempts and your home-made drain cleaner still doesn’t do the job, perhaps the problem is much bigger than you thought and that means you are going to need the help of a professional plumber who can do the job quickly and efficiently.
