Why Upgrade to High Efficiency Air Conditioning

air conditioning system

Our air conditioning system is perhaps one of the most, if not the most important appliance in our home. In a world where the climate reaches extremes far too often for comfort, our home air conditioning system is essentially the only thing that keeps us comfortable in our own homes.

Being comfortable in our homes, however, comes at a steep price, especially these days when power rates seem to be getting higher by the day. Homeowners like us, however, can choose to upgrade to high-efficiency air conditioning.

Increase SEER rating

You see, every air conditioning system is assigned a SEER or seasonal energy efficiency ratio rating, with the minimum rating standing at 13. When you upgrade to high-efficiency air conditioning, you also increase the SEER rating of your air conditioning system, which means bigger energy savings for you in the long run.

The following are the components that help boost the SEER rating of high-efficiency air conditioning systems.

1. Variable Speed Motor

These motors, which are also known as electronically-commutated motors or ECMs, significantly use less electricity than your usual air conditioner motor. Located inside the indoor blower and the outdoor compressor, ECMs also run more quietly and removes more indoor humidity. Unlike single-speed motors, ECMs also allows for slower speeds.

2. Thermal Expansion Valve (TXV)

The TXV essentially controls and measures the liquid refrigerant flow to the blower’s indoor evaporator coil. It is responsible for the efficient cooling of your home, as it senses when the weather requires more refrigerant. The TXV helps spare the compressor a lot of wear and tear and reduces your electric bill.

3. Dual-Speed Compressors

As their name implies, dual-speed compressors run at two different speeds. When the weather is extremely hot, they run at top speed, and that’s the only time they do so. Like the TXV, it saves the compressor a lot of stress as well as electricity.

Installing a Filter Light: Another High-Efficiency Air Conditioning Tip

Now not all upgrades to high-efficiency air conditioning are meant to increase the SEER rating, but they lower energy consumption and extend the life of air conditioning units just the same. One such upgrade is installing a filter light.

It’s the air filter that protects the blower, compressor, and condenser from any damage that excessive dirt can do. The air filter may not really have a direct role to play in the air conditioning process, but they are, without a doubt, one of the most important parts of an air conditioner, and it’s a part that needs maintenance work on a regular basis. That is what a filter light is essential for: remind you that it’s time to check the air filter.

At present, there are two types of filter lights available in the market. One is called a light timer, which you can set manually to remind you that the filter needs to be checked. The other one is a filter sensor, which lights up when airflow slows down.
